Bellingham Slam Media Report-
Slam fall to Albany in IBL Championship game, 126-111
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Bellingham Slam couldn’t survive the second-half hot shooting of the Albany Legends as they lost, 126-111, in the 2010 International Basketball League Championship game at the Washington Avenue Armory on Friday night.
The victory gives the Legends a league title in their first year of existence, and kept intact a streak that has seen the championship won on the home team’s court in every season since the IBL was formed in 2005.
The game was a close affair until Albany was able to pull away in the early stages of the fourth quarter, and featured 18 total lead changes.
After the Legends raced out to an early 11-4 lead, the Slam were able to come back with a pair of three-pointers from Paul Hafford and Tyler Amaya and led 26-24 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a period of runs as Albany scored 10 of the first 13 points, before Bellingham responded with 12 straight tallies to take a 41-34 lead with 4:41 left in the half. But the Slam could only manage four more points the rest of the quarter and trailed 48-45 at halftime.
The third quarter featured fast-paced, end-to-end action as both teams combined for 73 points. Morris Anderson nailed consecutive three-pointers and scored the Slam’s first eight points as they erased their halftime deficit to lead 53-52. There were ten more lead changes in the quarter before Albany closed out the frame with back-to-back layups by Deandre Thomas and Kenny Satterfield to lead 87-81.
The Slam were unable to trim into the deficit in the fourth quarter, as they still trailed by six points, at 97-91, after Derrick Webb hit a three-pointer with 6:56 left. That was the closest the Slam would get as Albany soon built and held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. A pair of rim-rattling dunks late in the contest by Damone Morris sent the home fans into a frenzy that lasted until time expired and the Legends hoisted the championship trophy.
Ryan Diggs led the way for the Slam with 18 points, while Jacob Stevenson finished with 17. Lukas Henne and Morris Anderson each contributed 14.
Albany was paced by the 29 points and eight assists of Kenny Satterfield. Deandre Thomas was named as the game’s MVP after finishing with a monster double-double of 21 points and 19 rebounds.
The Slam could not contain the Legends on the boards, getting outrebounded 60-37.
The Slam finished the season with a 15-8 record, while the Legends finished 19-3.

| Saturday, July 3rd - 2010 - Bellingham Slam(136) vs. Yamhill Highflyers(105) - Game Summary:
The #7 seed Yamhill HighFlyers looked like a team that had played 4 games in 4 days, and 5 games in 6 days as they game out tired in this semi-final IBL match-up against the #6 seeded Bellingham Slam. The Slam seemed to just get to the ball quicker and were a step ahead in the first quarter, building up a double digit lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The score at the end of one was 39-28. The HighFlyers seemed to get their feet a little bit in the 2nd period, but the Slam slowly and surely built upon their lead, and lead by 20 at the half, 72-52. The story was much the same in the 3rd period. The HighFlyers seemed like they were simply out of gas, and the Slam capitalized on the tired legs of the opponent. At end of 3 the score was 107-79, and the final was 136-105. Edmonton won 131 to 146. The following is the L.A. Lightning Media Report by Dave Loveton-
Knight gets career-high 47 in loss
Lathan notches 25 points and 16 boards for undermanned L.A.
EDMONTON, Canada -- Billy Knight poured in 47 points -- the second-most in L.A. Lightning team history -- but it wasn't enough to prevent a 146-131 pro basketball loss to the Edmonton Energy on Sunday night. The Energy took two out three in the weekend series with the defending IBL champions. Phil Givens set the L.A. scoring record with 57 points in the last game of the 2008 season. Knight’s previous high was 42 last season. Knight hit 16-of-34 from the field and 7-18 from 3-point range. The former UCLA standout scored 18 in the second quarter and 16 in the final period for the Lightning (14-4), who fell behind 29-9 after seven minutes and spent the rest of the game playing catch-up. “I had no idea I had 47,” said Knight, a 6-5 southpaw guard who played 43 minutes. “We were losing and I just wanted to help the team win any way possible. I felt like I had to do a little bit more because we had seven guys in the second half. I knew I had to step it up offensively. “Three games in three days wore us down. If we had more players, we probably would have won.”
Knight scored 22, 33 and 47 points in the three-game set, raising his scoring average from 19.0 to 25.4.
Steve Sir nailed 5-10 from downtown and led the Energy (14-6) with 33 points. William Funn added 22 points and 16 assists before picking up his second technical with six minutes remaining and getting ejected. The Energy were whistled for five technicals.
Trayvon Lathan had 25 points and a career-best 16 rebounds for L.A., which played the second half with only seven players after Ja’Shon Hampton suffered a leg injury.
Drew Housman had 19 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Lightning, which cut the deficit to three at 122-119 on a driving layup by Lathan with 5:44 to play. The Energy responded with an 11-4 run to regain control.
Edmonton outshot the visitors 52.5 to 45.3 percent and won the board battle 55-51. The Lightning shot an impressive 87.8 percent from the free-throw line (36-41), led by Tarron Williams (10-11), Housman (9-9) and Knight (8-9). Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Lightning, who trailed 71-58 at halftime.
“I’m proud of the guys,” said coach Ron Quarterman. “They played hard and stepped up. We only had seven and fatigue was a factor. “When you get tired, you make bad decisions. The good news is we have two days rest to get ready for Olympia.”
The Lightning, the second-place team in the Continental Division, will complete the regular season on Wednesday at the Olympia Reign in Washington. Olympia, the International Division leader, has the third-best record in the IBL at 16-5.
L.A. will open the playoffs on Friday in Portland, Ore.

Tacoma Tide 106 - 128 Bellingham Slam
June 17, 2010 (by Devon Heinen)
TacomaTideSports.com – “We gotta find some energy. You know? I don’t think we played hard enough tonight.”
That lack of energy that Tacoma assistant coach Bob Niehl talked about after the game got exploited early and often by Bellingham, as 6-foot-4 guard Paul Hafford lit up the Tide for six first-quarter three pointers in a Tacoma 126-106 loss.
“He was unstoppable [in the] first half,” said Niehl. “You just can’t let a guy do that.”
Locking in from distance, Hafford’s final strike sparked a 19-1 run by the Blasts to end the quarter and start the next to give Bellingham (11-6) a 45-25.
“He had 40 [points] our last game and he kind of started tonight where left last game,” said Bellingham head coach Rob Ridnour.
“They were going over a lot of screens instead of trailing me on ‘em so I was able to pop,” said Hafford, who finished the night with 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting from behind the arch.
When the guard didn’t hit from deep, he found holes in the lane, as he knifed through the Tacoma defense, getting to the rim to corral errant shots and set up his teammates.
“I just try to be aggressive on both ends and try to go in [the paint] and crash,” said Hafford. “We got some bigger guys that do the blocking out and I gotta go wrap up the ball.”
Down 99-73 to start the final 12 minutes play, Tacoma (5-14) caught on fire, starting the fourth quarter with a made free throw and then three straight Jameel Shareef three balls from the left corner.
“Jameel got it going, so I was trying to find him,” said teammate Antwan Williams, who had 10 assists.
“[Shareef] kept knockin’ down shots. So I mean, it was one of those things, ride the hot hand.”
The Tide’s defense also came alive, forcing five turnovers; however, Paul Hafford and his Bellingham teammates were just too much down the stretch, piling up 20 points in the final minutes to clinch the victory.
NOTES:
Tacoma was led offensively by Justin Murray and Antwan Williams, each scoring 19 points…Williams earned a double-double, scoring 19 and adding 10 assits…Tacoma shot 63.3 percent from the free throw line, converting 19 of 30 attempts…Bellingham outrebounded Tacoma 62 to 47…Tacoma’s next home game at Curtis High School is June 19 against the Central Oregon Hotshots. Hawk soars for career-high 26
Lathan has another double-double in fifth straight win
Juaquin Hawkins tossed in a career-best 26 points Saturday night, leading the Los Angeles Lightning to a 140-114 pro basketball victory over the Nevada Pride. Hawkins, a Long Beach State product who played for the Houston Rockets, also grabbed 10 rebounds in the IBL game at Cal Lutheran. Trayvon Lathan led L.A. with 31 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. The 6-8 guard hit 10-of-13 shots in the first half and scored 23 points as the Lightning built a 73-51 advantage. It was the fifth straight double-double for Lathan, a high-flying 6-8 guard, and his eighth of the year. Billy Knight scored 21 off the bench and Fred Vinson had 18 points, including a half-dozen 3-pointers, as the Lightning (11-2) won their fifth straight. Kamran Sufi had a game-high 11 assists. Dajuan Tate topped the Pride with 28 points, Giyoh Shea had 23 and Lorenzo Davis had a double-double for the second straight night with 19 points and 22 rebounds, including 10 offensive. The Lightning started fast with Lathan tossing in 16 in the first quarter, which ended with the home team ahead 35-23. L.A. outshot the Pride 51.8 to 40.2 percent for the game. Hawkins, a 6-7 left-hander who’s known as “Hawk”, knocked down 12 of 18 from the field. “We’re just trying to improve,” said Hawkins, who survived a stroke two years ago on New Year’s Eve in Australia. “We’ve got the playoffs coming up and Edmonton is going to be a good team to play. “I feel good out there,” added Hawkins. “Wow, I played 37 minutes? That’s a lot of minutes, especially for a 36-year-old. I made a personal challenge to play harder than I did last night (Friday) and it was good that I was able to do that.” After the stroke, Hawkins’ right side was completely numb and he had to learn how to talk again. Doctors said he’d never play ball again but he proved them wrong. A movie is planned about Hawkins’ life, called “Seeds of Hope,” and he says production is set to start in September. “It’s going to be a big deal, hopefully like ‘The Blind Side.’ “Just because you have an illness or hardship, it doesn’t mean your life is over,” Hawkins stated. The Lightning finish up their regular-season home schedule with benefit games on June 18-19 at Royal and Agoura Highs, respectively. The games are fundraisers for the schools' athletic programs. L.A. will play its final four games on the road, starting with a three-game trip at the Edmonton Energy in Canada on June 25-27. - Box Score |

Volcanoes edge Slam on late shot, 129-127
VANCOUVER, Wash. – A Kevin Tyner driving lay-in with 2.4 seconds left was the difference as the Vancouver Volcanoes edged the Bellingham Slam, 129-127, in a hotly-contested International Basketball League game at Clark College on Saturday.
The loss spoiled a career night for Paul Hafford, who scored a game-high 40 points thanks to hot outside shooting.
The Slam began the game with one of their hottest starts of the season, posting 24 points in the first six minutes, and led 41-33 at the end of the first quarter. Paul Hafford was unstoppable in the period, shooting 5-of-6 from three-point range and adding a three-point play from the foul line to lead both teams with 18 points.

The Slam chipped away at the Volcanoes’ lead, eventually tying the game with ten seconds left at 127-127 on a lay-in from Ike Ohanson. After Tyner’s go-ahead shot, the Slam had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a tough shot from the corner by Hafford didn’t go.
Hafford’s 40-point night was complemented by 25 points from Jacob Stevenson and 21 from Ike Ohanson.

| Friday, June 11th - 2010 - Vancouver Volcanoes(122) vs. Tacoma Tide(120) - Vancouver wins 122 to 120 over the recently hot Tacoma Tide.
Vancouver Volcano media report-
In the last five and a half seconds of tonight’s game against the Tacoma Tide, Vancouver found themselves in almost the identical situation as last week—ahead by two with possession in the hands of the opposing team. The Tide were able to get a shot off but to no avail. The score remained Volcanoes 122, Tacoma Tide 120.
“The games are too close,” coach Bryan Hunter said.
The last three have come straight down to the final seconds, where it was still anyone’s ball game.
Part of the reason Vancouver has not come away with an easy win is do to their shot percentage lately, shooting only 18% from 3-point range tonight.
“We’re shooting so poorly, and it’s hard to get the easy buckets down low because extra attention is given to the Forwards,” Hunter said.
Contrary to this lack of efficiency in scoring, Devin Uskoski was able to lead the team with 25 points, as well as in rebounds by considerable numbers, coming away with 24 total.
When it looked like Tacoma could answer back to anything Vancouver would put up and subsequently regain the lead, Damon King was able to put in a lay-in and draw a foul in the final seconds of play, putting Vancouver up by two.
“I struggled with shooting all game, but as a team we stuck together to pull it off,” King said.
King would make only 2 of his 8 shots taken tonight, but the critical one was enough to give Vancouver the lead till the final buzzer.
“We just needed to stay together as a team, be aggressive, and attack.”
The Volcanoes were able to provide enough pressure on defense to cause the final shot to hit too hard off the backboard, ending The Tides’ all to consistent response to Vancouver’s scoring on the night.

Report from Tacoma Tide
Tide Sees Nine-point Halftime Lead Fade, but Late Push Gets Tacoma Past Visiting Olympia
Tacoma Tide 112 – Olympia Reign 104
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Sixteen days ago, the Tide extended its losing streak to nine games. Sixteen days ago, the Olympia Reign came to Curtis High School and downed Tacoma 97-92 thanks in large part to Nate Menefee’s 32 first-half points. Sixteen days ago, Tacoma was searching for answers.
“We had some five-minute stretches where we out played them,” said Tide assistant coach Bob Niehl after Tacoma’s May 27 loss to Olympia. “And then there were some five-minute stretches where we didn’t play well at all.
Sixteen days later, the Tide found itself hosting the Reign once again. After a nine-point halftime lead dissipated to just one with a little over a minute and a half left in the game, Tacoma found the answer it was looking for, perimeter ball movement that led to an open Dontay Harris three ball from the left wing that clinched a Tacoma 112-104 win and the team’s third straight victory.
“I think we’re doing a better job of staying confident when teams make runs,” said Tide power forward Jacob Manning, who finished the night with a game-high 27 points.
Tacoma (5-12) got out to a slow start, falling behind 22-9 early in the first quarter, but a 43-22 run to end the half erased the Tide’s deficit and put the team up 53-44 at the break. The key to the turnaround?
“Hustle,” said Tide guard Jameel “Quick” Shareef, who chipped in five points. “Come out hard, finish hard.”
Limiting Olympia’s Nate Menefee, the International Basketball League’s top scorer, also had something to do with it.
“They played good defense,” said Menefee. “Can’t complain. Could’ve knocked down a couple more shots.”
Sixteen days ago when Menefee and the Reign took on the Tide, the guard had 32 points at the half. Tonight he headed into the locker room at the intermission with seven.
The 5-foot-10 Menefee found his touch for Olympia (12-3) in the final 24 minutes of play, knocking down four three pointers while pouring in 20 second-half points. Menefee’s surge fueled an Olympia team that trimmed its deficit to five at 81-76 after three quarters and used a 16-2 run to start the fourth that gave the visiting Reign its first lead since an early 22-9 advantage in the first quarter.
Tacoma answered back with a Justin Murray three pointer, evening the score at 86-86. The tie was the first of three in the game’s final minutes until Dontay Harris’ long-range strike with a little over a minute and a half left and five straight converted shots from the charity stripe put away the Reign for good.
Notes:
Dontay Harris finished the night for the Tide with 23 points…Five players scored in double figures for Tacoma…Olympia forced 23 Tide turnovers, while committing 21 of its own, the same number of turnovers the Reign committed in its May 27 road victory against the Tide…Tacoma shot 11-of-34 from behind the arch. Olympia converted 14-of-26 attempts, with five coming in the final 12 minutes of play…Tacoma power forward Sean Muilenburg dressed for tonight’s game, but did not enter the game. It’s the first game he’s not played in this season…Tacoma’s next home game at Curtis High School is June 17 against the Bellingham Slam. With six regular players and having signed two players from the USA All Stars ranks (Adam Rankin and Mike Knight- tryout players from the USA All Stars), the Olympia Reign took it to the Yamhill Highflyers 140 to 116 at Yamhill. The win suggests that Olympia, an exhibition team last year, is a contender in their first full IBL season. The loss for Yamhill might be more of a 'moment' as members of thier team heal up from a heavy early schedule. - Box Score |
| Thursday, May 27th - 2010 - Tacoma Tide(92) vs. Olympia Reign(97) - Tacoma Tide Report-
May 27, 2010 - Curtis High School
A nice 2nd Half push was not enough for the Tide to overcome a tremendous first half from Olympia, as the Tide continue losing skid.
A 21-7 second-half run wasn’t enough Thursday night for the Tacoma Tide as the team dropped its ninth straight game, this time at home to the Olympia Reign 97-92.
“It’s a matter of executing every time down the floor. We have to come down defensively every time and say ‘hey we’re not going to give you a good percentage shot,’ and then you have to execute it that way,” said Tide assistant coach Bob Niehl.
Olympia (9-2) got out to a hot start thanks to 32 first-half points by Nate Menefee, with eighteen of the 5-foot-10 guard’s 32 coming from behind the arch.
“It all started on the defensive end. We were able to get out in transition, where I could be open and just knock down shots,” said Menefee.
Halftime adjustments made by Tide head coach Mark Lovelady and assistant Bob Niehl shut down Menefee in the second half, as he scored just six points in the final 24 minutes of play.
“We talked about ‘let somebody else beat ya,’ you know?” said Niehl. “We did that a little better in the second half and as a result, we slowed him down.”
With Menefee neutralized, Tacoma (2-11) chipped away at the Reign lead. The Tide finished the third quarter on a seven to nothing run and extended it to 21-7 midway through the final period, cutting Olympia’s lead to two. Justin Murray, the Tide’s leading scorer on the night, was the primary contributor, pouring in 10 of his 16 points in the fourth.
“We had some five-minute stretches where we out played them,” said Tide assistant coach Bob Niehl. “And then there were some five-minute stretches where we didn’t play well at all.
After the momentum switched from team to team one last time, the final stretch belonged to Olympia. The Reign scored five straight points, giving the team a 96-87 advantage, and then sank a free throw to end the hopes of a Tacoma come-from-behind victory.

Slam comeback falls short in Edmonton, 132-129
EDMONTON, Alta. – The Bellingham Slam nearly overcame a 13-point fourth quarter deficit, but fell to the Edmonton Energy, 132-129, in an up-tempo International Basketball League game at Jasper Place High School on Thursday.
The two teams traded leads several times during the first half before Edmonton began to pull away in the third quarter.
Edmonton scored eight of the fourth quarter’s first ten points to give them their first double-digit lead, at 109-96. --------------------------------------------------------
Vinson tosses in career-best 33 in 15-point win
Lathan (32 points) continues red-hot shooting
Fred Vinson scored 23 of his career-high 33 points in the first half Saturday night to guide the Los Angeles Lightning to a 130-115 IBL basketball victory over the Arizona Raptors at the Gilbert Sports Arena in Thousand Oaks.
"Once we got our veteran guys on the floor, it made a difference," said Vinson, who drained 7-of-18 from 3-point range. "All five guys who started the fourth quarter were on our championship team from last season. We’re familiar with each other and we had a great chemistry defensively. We went to a zone and took them out of what they were doing."
Trayvon Lathan had another spectacular shooting game for the defending IBL champions, who improved to 6-0 with their 12th win in the last 13 home games. Lathan, a slashing 6-8 guard, hit 15-of-19 from the field and scored 32 points. He also had eight rebounds and four steals before leaving with 1:33 to play after falling hard on his back.
Lathan, the team’s top scorer at 27.7 per game, converted 14-18 on Friday night when he scored a career-best 36 points. He’s shooting 78.4 percent in his last two games (29-37).
"He has a great ability to get to the basket and he has good basketball savvy," said Vinson. "He’s wiry and he’s really crafty with the ball. A kid like that has a bright future."
The Lightning led by just three with 9:18 to play before going on an 18-6 run that stretched the lead to 15 at 118-103. Bryon Russell (23 points, nine rebounds, five assists) started the run with a layup and three-point play. Lathan capped the outburst with back-to-back layups.
Juaquin Hawkins, one of three former NBA players on the current Lightning roster, had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Kamran Sufi had 14 of his team’s 33 assists.
The Lightning, who led 72-67 at the half, outshot the visitors 54.9 to 46.1 percent.
Dubois Williams hit 9 of 10 shots and had 27 points, leading six players in double figures for the Raptors (0-2).
Vinson is averaging 21.3 points and has hit 47.7 percent of his long-range shots (21-44) in his last three games.
"I’m in better shape this year and having stronger legs really helps my shot," said Vinson, who’s shooting 45.3 percent from 3-point range for the year.
The Lightning will continue its13-game homestand on Friday and Saturday at Cal Lutheran against the Kankakee County Soldiers of Illinois.

Yamhill edges Slam on last-second free throws, 115-114
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Yamhill Highflyers overcame a 13-point second half deficit to edge the Bellingham Slam, 115-114, in an International Basketball League game on Saturday at Whatcom Pavilion.
The Slam appeared to be in control of the game, leading by as much as 17 points in the first half before the Highflyers began to mount a comeback. Bellingham led at halftime, 62-58.
Yamhill tied the game with their first two shots of the third quarter, before Bellingham used a 12-0 run to take an 81-69 lead with four minutes left in the frame.
But it was nearly all Yamhill in the fourth quarter, as they used a 12-0 run of their own to tie the game at 98-98 with 6:41 left. They went on to take their first lead of the game, at 113-112, on a technical free throw with 34 seconds left in the game. But Ryan Diggs gave the Slam the lead back, at 114-113 by hitting a pair of foul shots with 14 seconds remaining. With the last shot, Yamhill’s Cheyenne Moore drove to the basket and drew contact, and hit his resulting charity shots to put the Highflyers back up by one with two seconds left. A desperation half-court shot by the Slam was well short.
The loss spoiled a solid outing by Bellingham’s Jacob Stevenson and Ryan Diggs, who scored 32 and 30 points, respectively. Ike Ohanson finished with 18 points and ten rebounds.
Cheyenne Moore led four Yamhill players to reach the 20-point plateau with 29 points.
Things don’t get easier for the Slam, as they travel to Edmonton for a three game set with the Energy beginning on Thursday. They return home on May 31 to take on the Olympia Reign, with a 5 p.m. tip-off set for Whatcom Pavilion.

Stevenson’s 33 leads Slam to road victory over Tacoma
TACOMA – Guard Jacob Stevenson continued his strong start by scoring 33 points as the Bellingham Slam defeated the Tacoma Tide, 116-95, in an International Basketball League non-conference game at Curtis High School on Thursday.
Stevenson, who was coming off his first career triple-double last Sunday against British Columbia, netted his 33 with 14-for-23 shooting from the floor and only five trips to the free throw line.
The Slam, who have traditionally struggled in road games at Tacoma dating back to their days in the American Basketball Association, found themselves down by nine points well into the first quarter, before Zach Bruce and Morris Anderson closed the quarter with six points to trim the deficit to three, at 25-22.
Bellingham turned things around in the middle stages of the second quarter, using a 15-2 run to take a 50-44 lead into halftime.
Tacoma scored the first two baskets of the third quarter before the Slam really got their offense going, pouring in 24 points in a five-minute span in the middle of the frame to go up 74-54 with 5:44 left.
The Slam scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to max out their lead at 32 points. The Tide rattled off 13 straight in the middle part of quarter to trim the gap to 17 points, but it was too little, too late as Bellingham cruised the rest of the way for their second victory against the Tide this season.
Stevenson’s 33 points led five Slam players in double figures. Anderson finished with 16 points, while Ike Ohanson posted another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Dontay Harris and Lorenzo Rollins shared the scoring lead for Tacoma with 19 points each.

Edney relives coast-to-coast game winner
Vinson hits nine 3s; Lightning edge Waves 119-117 on TV
Tyus Edney showed that Lightning can strike twice.
With the score tied and 6.4 seconds left in Sunday’s IBL game at SBCC’s Sports Pavilion, the former UCLA star drove the length-of-the-court and hit a 5-foot floater to lift the L.A. Lightning to a dramatic 119-117 pro basketball win over the Oregon Waves. "With time running out, you have to get it down there," said Edney, who’s famously know for a similar coast-to-coast drive and layup that lifted UCLA over Missouri 75-74 in the second round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament. The Bruins went on to win their 11th title. "It was a little floater. I had to put it up high to get it over the big man. "This is a good win. They came to play today." The defending IBL champion Lightning (4-0) trailed by 12 at halftime (64-52) of the IBL Finals rematch that was televised live on FOX 11. L.A. got back in the game with a 30-19 third-quarter surge. They trailed by as many as 10 in the final period before storming back to take a 109-106 lead on a 3-pointer by Fred Vinson from the right corner. Vinson scored 27 points for the second straight day and set a Lightning record by hitting 9-15 from 3-point land. He’s shooting 59.3 percent (16-27) from downtown in his last two games.
Trayvon Lathan added 23 points and 15 rebounds (7 offensive) while Edney, who played four years in the NBA, had 19 points and 11 assists.
Anthony Davis led all scorers with 39 points and 11 rebounds for the Waves (0-2). Amani Daanish had 16 points and Lorenzo Davis chipped in with 15 points and nine boards.
Lathan scored on a driving layup to put the Lightning up 117-115 with 11 seconds left. Davis was fouled on a 3-pointer and he hit the first two foul shots, making him 9-9 in the fourth quarter. Following an L.A. timeout, Davis missed his third free throw, Lathan grabbed the rebound and got it to Edney for his dramatic game-winner.
"That play never gets old," said Lightning coach Ron Quarterman when asked about Edney’s shot. "We didn’t want to call timeout. We were just going to go with it.
"Whenever you beat a team like that the first night (the Lightning won 136-110 on Saturday), it’s always going to be hard the next night." Bryon Russell had 14 points and grabbed nine of his 10 rebounds in the second half. Juaquin Hawkins contributed 11 points while Travis Pinick had 10 for L.A., which outshot the visitors in the second half 44.7 to 27.7 percent. The Lightning continue a 13-game homestand on Friday and Saturday at Cal Lutheran against the Phoenix Red Rock Raptors. Tip time is 7:15 p.m. both nights.

Twice British Columbia was able to trim the deficit to single digits, before heading into halftime with Bellingham ahead 53-40.
The Titans offense was much improved in the second half, shooting 49 percent from the floor compared to 26 percent in the first half, but Bellingham matched them nearly shot-for-shot as they had an answer for everything the Titans put in. Nine points by new Slam center Zach Bruce, all in the fourth quarter, helped hold back the Titans.

Lathan, Ayer hit it big in Vegas
They tally 61 points on 25-32 shooting
Trayvon Lathan and Chris Ayer had career games on Saturday as the Los Angeles Lightning rallied for a 140-125 IBL basketball victory over the Nevada Pride in Las Vegas. Lathan, a 6-8 guard who played pro ball in China this year, scored a career-high 32 points on 12-16 shooting. He was a perfect 7-7 from the field in the second half when L.A. overcame a 63-58 halftime deficit by outscoring the Pride 82-62 in the last two quarters. Ayer, a 6-11 center, sank 13-16 from the field on his way to a career- best 29 points. He also had eight rebounds and three blocked shots. The Lightning (2-0) beat the Pride 143-97 in its season opener on Friday. "They (Nevada) shot it a lot better today," said Ayer. "We shot real well in the second half and we were playing really good team ball. We were running stuff that they weren’t defending well. We picked apart their defense." Lathan and Ayer combined to shoot 78.1 percent (25-32) and made 14 of 15 shots in the second half. Dajuan Tate led the Pride with 32 points and Trevor Lawrence had 31 and 11 boards. Lightning forward Keith Simpson came off the bench to score 22 points in 26 minutes with eight rebounds. He hit 4-of-5 from 3-point range and Fred Vinson added 14 points with four triples. Phil Givens had 17 points and eight assists and Travis Pinick grabbed 12 rebounds, helping L.A. to a 57-39 advantage on the boards. The Lightning, who shot 56 percent, were only ahead by three (82-79) midway through the third quarter but took control with a 10-3 run, capped by a slam dunk from Lathan and a technical free throw by Vinson. Lathan scored 15 in the third period, helping the Lightning to a 43-30 advantage. "We just had to grind it out, they weren’t going to lose by 40 in two straight games," said Lathan, who had six rebounds and six assists. "We shared the ball again (30 assists) and the guys played hard." Nevada got within four, 118-114, with seven minutes to play before Vinson hit a 3-pointer and Simpson jammed on the break to ignite a 7-0 run that boosted the lead back to 11. The Lightning will play its home opener on Saturday at Cal Lutheran against the Oregon Waves in a rematch of last year’s IBL Championship Series. On Sunday, the same teams will battle at Santa Barbara City College in a live TV game (KKFX/FOX 11) at 3 p.m. - Box Score |

Once we clicked, we didn’t stop. “Everyone was playing unselfish and when you do that, the result is usually positive.” The Lightning had 29 assists on 51 baskets, led by newcomer Keith Simpson (8), veteran Fred Vinson (6) and Lathan (6). It was a great team effort.” Tony Roberts added 14 points while Vinson and David Reichel had 10 apiece for the Lightning. The same two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon. Late rally falls short, Slam lose 110-107 to Titans
LANGLEY, B.C. – The Bellingham Slam overcame a 17-point second half deficit, but ended up short as they fell to the British Columbia Titans, 110-107, in International Basketball League action on Sunday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre.
The win for the Titans was the first against the Slam in six tries for the franchise, dating back to last season.
Bellingham had the better of two struggling offenses in the first half, shooting 42.5 percent from the floor to British Columbia’s 35.4 percent, and led at halftime, 50-46. The Slam held a ten point lead late in the second quarter, before the Titans’ J.R. Morris hit consecutive three-pointers to guide his team closer.
The Titans came out on fire in the third quarter, tying the game at 50 just 68 seconds in, and eventually building a lead that twice maxed out at 17, before the Slam closed the frame with seven points from Ryan Diggs and Brandon Hartley to trail by ten, at 88-78.
The Slam continued to rally in the fourth quarter, and got within one point, at 89-88, on a Diggs layup from Derrick Webb with eight minutes left, but the Titans responded with a three-pointer by Avery Smith to pull away.
Poor free throw shooting down the stretch by British Columbia helped keep Bellingham in the game, but they could not take advantage on the offensive end.
The Slam defense held the Titans to 24 or fewer points in each quarter except for the third, when B.C. exploded for 42.
Jacob Stevenson was the Slam’s leading scorer for the fourth time this season, with 23 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals. Ike Ohanson posted another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Derrick Webb, playing his first significant minutes this season, finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Slam upended by Olympia Reign, 120-108
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Bellingham Slam struggled in nearly every aspect of the game as they were defeated by the Olympia Reign, 120-108, in a sloppy International Basketball League action at Whatcom Pavilion on Saturday night.
The 108 points scored for the Slam were the lowest scored in a game since April 3, 2009, when they fell to the Seattle Mountaineers, 106-102. The loss was also just their second setback at home in since 2007.
The Slam struggled from the early going, posting just 16 points in the first quarter. Despite the slow start, Bellingham trailed by just six at halftime, at 48-42.
Despite playing their second game in as many nights, Olympia just got better as the game went on, eventually building a 19 point lead, at 103-84, with less than six minutes left in the game.
Bellingham was able to make things somewhat interesting for the home fans, rallying to get the deficit down to seven with under a minute to play, but they couldn’t get any closer.
Bellingham was led by Jacob Stevenson, who scored 27 points and added seven rebounds and 3 blocks. Morris Anderson added 17 points, while newcomer Bryson McKenzie grabbed a team-high ten rebounds.
The Slam again struggled from beyond the arc, managing just 25 percent on 6-of-24 shooting from outside. Both teams combined for 39 turnovers in the contest.
The Reign were led by the 37 points of Nate Menafee. Nicholas Moore also had an impressive outing with a double-double of 26 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Slam will look to regroup as they continue their opening homestand against the Vancouver Volcanoes on April 23. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion. - Box Score |

| Saturday, April 17th - 2010 - USA All-Stars(140) vs. Lansing Capitals(161) - The IBL welcomes back the Lansing Capitals as a 'branding team' into the IBL. A branding team plays less games than regular, is not eligible for playoffs but the games are real. Branding teams are a way for a team to build into a community, but slowly, methodically and in fact, it may take years for a 'branding team' to get the full entry, full schedule. Lansing sported the same uniforms and fast paced style of play the team was known for in 2006 when they last played in the IBL. Many of the players in this game were guys selected from the April 4th and 5th tryout/USA All Stars weekend of play- players considered right about- at the IBL level of play or at least able to work thier way on a roster in some capacity. Will Wright led all scorers in this game with 28 points. - Box Score |
