2010 Venue
The Washington Avenue Armory is one of the more historied venues for minor league basketball; hundreds of NBA players have come through the Armory to play against the Albany Patroons over the years. Pictured above is a Patroons team from the 1980s. In the video above Phil Jackson discusses his memories of the Patroons and the Armory in particular.
Note from the Legends owner: the Albany Patroons played at the Washington Avenue Armory for over a decade and treated us to talented players like Mario Elie, Vincent Askew and Scottie Brooks and became the training ground for such notable coaches as Phil Jackson, Bill Musselman and George Karl all of whom parlayed their experiences into head coaching jobs in the NBA. The basketball was good and the atmosphere was electric. On any given night, you could see any number of future or former NBA players coming into the armory and the place was packed. Other players who played for Albany are now NBA coaches themselves- Rick Carlisle and Scott Brooks. And other greats included Derrick Rowland, Sidney Lowe (now coaching NC State), Lowes Moore, Michael Ray Richardson, Tony Campbell and countless others. One year the Albany team had a record of 48-6. This Armory, this history, this team, our fans...this is what the Albany Legends and Albany Legends fans are made of. A new era, basketball belongs here, we belong here.
Jamario Moon (far left) played for Albany; Moon was an acrobatic, athletic and prolific scorer who seemed to defy the law of gravity for the fans in the Armory and quickly found his way to the NBA where today he plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Erick Barkley (next to Jamario Moon) also played in Albany; Barkley played for the Portland Trailblazers in 2001/2002. Also pictured is Albany point guard, Shaun Fountain and next to him is Derrick Rowland (far right). Rowland is the Albany Legends Vice President of Player Development and Head Coach, bringing to Albany over 20 years of professional basketball success and an unwavering commitment to the youth of the Capital Region that dates back to his playing days under none other than Phil Jackson. Rowland played at Potsdam State and then went on to the NBA in 1985/1986 and then to Europe and the CBA; in fact, Rowland is the all time leader in points, steals, blocked shots and games played for the Albany Patroons. When not on the Armory floor, Coach Rowland can be found working with the youth of our region, sharing basketball skills and life's lessons as he motivates. Called none other than Dr D. by the fans, a nickname he earned in the mid 80s, Derrick Rowland brings that same leadership, dedication and work ethic to the Legends bench. Coach Rowland is the perfect fit to write the next legendary chapter in the new era of Albany basketball history, on and off the court.
